Gleyber Torres lifts Yankees over Guardians with walk-off single

The New York Yankees defeated the Cleveland Guardians, 5-4, in walk-off fashion on Saturday afternoon at Yankee Stadium.

Right-hander Nestor Cortes got the start for New York and was outstanding once again. He allowed just two runs on one hit over 7.1 innings while striking out eight.

The bullpen was good other than Chad Green, who allowed a go-ahead home run in the eighth. Clay Holmes and Miguel Castro each had scoreless appearances.

Josh Naylor opened the scoring in the top half of the fifth with a two-run shot to right to put Cleveland up 2-0. In the bottom half of the inning, the Yankees scored a pair of runs to tie the game. Isiah Kiner-Falefa lined a RBI single to right and Kyle Higashioka launched a sacrifice fly to center.

In the seventh, Josh Donaldson gave the Yankees a 3-2 lead with his second home run of the season.

Austin Hedges put the Guardians back on top in the eighth with a two-run homer to left.

In the ninth, Kiner-Falefa tied the game at four with a two-out RBI double off the left-field wall. Following that, Gleyber Torres came off the bench to pinch-hit for Kyle Higashioka and delivered a walk-off single to right-center to give the Yankees a 5-4 victory.

DJ LeMahieu extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a single to left in the eighth. Anthony Rizzo, Aaron Hicks, Joey Gallo and Kyle Higashioka each had a hit as well.

The Yankees will go for the three-game sweep of the Guardians on Sunday afternoon with Gerrit Cole on the mound. First pitch is scheduled for 1:35 p.m.
