The Rochester Americans defeated the Springfield Thunderbirds, 3-2, in a shootout on Tuesday night at the Blue Cross Arena.
Springfield led 2-1 after two periods, but Rochester scored midway through the third to tie the game and eventually send it to overtime. After nobody scored in overtime, the Amerks won the shootout, 3-2.
Michael Mersch and Sean Malone scored for Rochester in regulation while Jack Quinn, JJ Peterka and Arttu Ruotsalainen netted goals in the shootout. Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen turned aside 23-of-25 shots to earn the win.
Nathan Todd and Mathew Pecca found the back of the net in regulation for Springfield while Sam Anas and James Neal tallied in the shootout. Joel Hofer stopped 32-of-34 shots.
Rochester finished 0-for-3 on the power play and a perfect 2-for-2 on the penalty kill.
The Amerks will be in Utica on Friday night to face the Comets at 7 p.m.
