How do I request an extension?
To get and extension, file an Automatic Extension of Time to File US Individual Income Tax Return (Form 4868) before the date of your return. Additional details can be found here.
You have to have a proper estimate of your yearly taxes. If the estimate isn’t proper it will be labeled as not having filed a valid extension request. This may leave you with a fee for late filing.
An extension of time to file is not also an extension of time to pay. If you don’t pay the amount due by the regular date, you will owe interest on top of the unpaid amount.
It is possible that you could also get penalized for paying your taxes late unless you have reasonable cause. If you are granted an extension, you will have until October 17 to send in your tax information.
