A Democrat has joined the race for Ontario County Sheriff.
The Finger Lakes Times reports retired State Police Sergeant Steve Slavny has taken out nominating papers to become the third candidate in the race. A current member of the department, Lt. David Cirencione and retired Gates Police Sergeant Silvio Palermo, who ran in 2020, are seeking the Republican nod. Palermo is also seeking the Conservative party nomination. The 61-year-old Slavny is a Penfield High graduate. He was stationed in Newark, as well as in Jamestown, Horseheads and Henrietta during his time with the State Police.
Former Sheriff Phil Povero was appointed to take over after Kevin Henderson resigned over accusations of improper conduct within the department.
