Firefighters from several districts were called to an explosion in Cayuga County late-Saturday.
Reports of an explosion, which could be heard between Auburn and Throop, came in around 9:40 p.m. It took firefighters some time to determine the exact location of the sound.
However, officials with the Throop Fire Department, who responded to the scene- described the incident as a natural gas tank explosion. The Department of Environmental Conservation police are leading the investigation.
The explosion occurred at a business on Whitehead Lane. Initial reports by first responders indicated that despite an open burn ban being in effect at the moment, the explosion was started by a rubbish fire near the tank.
Throop Fire Department, the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office, New York State Police, DEC Police, and Throop Code Enforcement were all on scene during the overnight hours.
