Cayuga County-area schools have fared well since COVID-19 mask mandate lifted

Since the COVID-19 mask mandate for schools was lifted, a few schools in Cayuga County have seen an increase in cases, but most haven’t seen a significant rise.

The nine school district in the Cayuga County area- Auburn, Cato-Meridian, Moravia, Jordan-Elbridge, Port Byron, Southern Cayuga, Skaneateles, Union Springs and Weedsport- have reported 164 new COVID-19 cases since the mandate was lifted on March 2, according to The Citizen.

The Auburn school district has seen 36 new cases in the last 14 days.

Moravia has reported 66 new cases in the past 14 days, the largest number of cases so far this month in the Cayuga-Onondaga BOCES system. Union Springs has matched its total number of February cases, 29, in the past 14 days.

Weedsport, Cato-Meridian, and Skaneatles have all stayed below February total cases numbers in the two weeks since the mask mandate ended.

Jordan-Elbridge, Port Byron, and Southern Cayuga have all reported cases numbers lower than five in the past 14 days.


Before to the mask mandate being lifted, Cayuga County saw more than 100 new COVID-19 cases everyday, with the 7-day average positivity rate exceeding 17%.
