Officials in the city of Ithaca are clarifying and rallying behind state leaders, as they try to crackdown on businesses in New York selling marijuana illegally.
While the state has made recreational marijuana legal, licenses to sell it have not been granted.
Acting Mayor Laura Lewis issued a statement with City’s attorney, pointing out that it remains illegal to gift marijuana in a business setting.
“Recent media reports have described business operators selling a product or service, including club memberships, to consumers and providing cannabis as a ‘gift’ in return. This activity is illegal. These violators must stop their activity immediately, or face the consequences,” they said.
Among those consequences, OCM has said violators will risk the opportunity to get a license in the legal market, and face substantial fines in the future.
