New York Governor Kathy Hochul is seeking $4 million in her executive budget for the first state veterans cemetery. Her plan includes $2 million in state funds and $2 million in federal to support Sampson Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
The cemetery, opened in 2011 at the site of former Sampson Air Force Base and Sampson Naval Training Station in Romulus, is currently operated by Seneca County’s economic development corporation, according to The Citizen.
This proposal comes after a legislators, namely Senator Pam Helming, pushed to make Sampson a state-run cemetery. New York is one of few states without a state veterans cemetery.
