Fatal snowmobile accident under investigation in Oswego County

State police are investigating a fatal snowmobile crash that happened on Hog Back Road in the town of Orwell, Oswego County.

According to troopers, around 11 p.m. on January 17, officers were dispatched after a plow truck operator discovered a snowmobile with major front-end damage off the shoulder of the roadway near a utility pole.

As troopers arrived on-scene they discovered a male lying near the snowmobile unconscious.

The operator, who was not breathing at the time, was identified as Steven Cronk Jr., 41, of Altmar. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Preliminary investigation has determined that the snowmobile was traveling west on Hog Back Road when the driver failed to negotiate a curve and exited the roadway- striking the utility pole.

The investigation remains active.
