One person is dead after a standoff with police during the early morning hours in the village of Penn Yan.
Police in Penn Yan were called to a residence on East Elm Street for the report of a subject with a gun, threatening to shoot people.
Upon arrival, police were able to secure the immediate area and learned that the subject was armed with a shotgun. The person had allegedly barricaded themselves inside the bathroom of a multi-unit residential structure.
Officers made contact with all other residents and safely evacuated them. Officers set up a perimeter and attempted to contact the barricaded subject, before forcing entry into the area.
Once officers found the person- they realized the subject was suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The Penn Yan Volunteer Ambulance was on-scene and provided immediate medical assistance.
The subject, who was not identified by police, ultimately succumbed to injuries at the local hospital.
Deputies assisted the Penn Yan Police Department on-scene.
The investigation remains active.
