Cornell’s Ian Shane named ECAC Goaltender of the Week

ECAC Hockey announced Monday that freshman Ian Shane has been named the league’s MAC Goaltending Goalie of the Week after his stellar collegiate debut on Sunday night at Arizona State.

Debuting in Division I’s closest rink to his hometown of Manhattan Beach, California – Arizona State’s Oceanside Ice Arena – Shane was brilliant against the Sun Devils. Coming on in relief late in the first period with Cornell facing a three-goal deficit, Shane stopped all 23 shots he saw the rest of the way to steady the Big Red ship and set the stage for a comeback that ultimately fell one goal short of an equalizer.

Shane’s effort puts him in rare company even among Cornell’s perennially strong group of goaltenders. Since the turn of the century, only one Big Red goaltender – Matthew Galajda ’20 – has posted more consecutive saves to start his collegiate career before conceding a goal. In his next outing, Shane will likely have a chance to top Galajda’s mark of 27 straight saves in a game against Alabama Huntsville on Oct. 27, 2017.

Shane is the second Big Red backstop to earn the league’s weekly goaltending honor this season, joining senior Nate McDonald (Nov. 22).

The Big Red continues its travels this weekend with a pair of games against North Dakota at 7:07 p.m. CT on Friday and 6:07 p.m. CT on Saturday.
