Ontario County introduces rigid plastics recycling event: What’s included?

  • Staff Report

Ontario County is expanding its recycling program to include rigid plastics, building on its existing collection of household hazardous waste, electronics, tires, mattresses, and paints. This initiative, aimed at offering residents more environmentally friendly disposal options, will take place during a pilot event on June 1 at the Ontario County Landfill, from 8-11 a.m.

Residents interested in participating must preregister between May 6-29 by emailing [email protected]. The event targets large and bulky plastic items that are not accepted in regular curbside recycling, such as outdoor furniture, playsets, laundry baskets, and large storage containers. These items play a significant role in household waste and their inclusion in recycling efforts represents a significant step towards sustainability.

To ensure a smooth recycling process, participants are required to bring items that are clean, free of debris or chemical residues, and, if necessary, disassembled. This initiative not only helps reduce landfill waste but also promotes the recycling of materials that can be repurposed, supporting Ontario County’s commitment to environmental stewardship. For more details, residents can visit the county’s recycling website.
