WAYNE REGIONAL PREVIEW: Girls volleyball team faces Marcellus in Class B

Saturday afternoon will pit the Wayne Eagles girls volleyball team against Section III’s Marcellus Mustangs for a spot at the table in the state semi-final round next weekend.  Both Wayne and Marcellus have had similar paths to get to this point in post-season play, and with practically mirrored regular seasons, the match is sure to be can’t miss.

Wayne heads in to Saturday’s match on a three-match winning streak, taking down fellow Finger Lakes East opponents Geneva and Newark in the quarter and semi-final round of sectional play.  Both matches were decided in straight sets 3-0.  The Eagles then defeated Honeoye Falls-Lima last Saturday to capture the Section V title for Class B 3-1.  Last Saturday was also the first time Wayne was sent to a fourth set all season in match style play, as they lost the first set of the match.

Marcellus comes in to the match out of Section III, holding a record of 15-0 overall, and 8-0 in league play.  Playing out of the OHSL-Liberty division, the Mustangs have a similar scouting report as Wayne.  Marcellus defeated Cazenovia in the semi-finals 3-0, and Westhill in the finals 3-1.  The Mustangs then had to face Olean out of Section VI in the regional play-in round, and were victorious 3-0 on Wednesday night.

With near equal records, Wayne and Marcellus are as near an even match-up as you can find.  Both rosters are evenly mixed with senior experience and underclass youth, and neither team has faced a mutual opponent of each other.  With neither team having a state volleyball title, the match-up proves to be an important step to clinch the first.  The Eagles and Mustangs play Saturday at 12:30 pm at LeRoy High School.
