How are rental vehicles handled by New York State Thruway, cashless tolling process?

Cashless tolling has been rolling on the New York State Thruway for several months. While there have been some isolated hiccups for motorists- a vast majority of the transition has gone smoothly.

That said, a common question that has come up since the changeover involves rental vehicles. How are they handled? How are they processed? Will you get billed if you travel on the Thruway in a rental?

The answer is ‘yes’ motorists are billed for the miles traveled on the Thruway no matter the type of vehicle they are in. If it doesn’t belong to them- the rental company that owns the car will handle passing the cost along.

News10NBC found that typically, a fee comes along with that, which is administered by the individual rental company- not New York State.

A solution they found was using your own E-ZPass transponder, instead of the one included in the rental vehicle.
