Phelps woman accused of stealing $58K from her employer in Wayne County

A Phelps resident has been arrested and accused of embezzling more than $58,000 from her employer in Wayne County. The alleged theft occurred over a period of five years, investigators say.

Shannon Forbes, 36, of Phelps was the former bookkeeper for Empire Enterprises tree service based out of Arcadia.

Owner Joe Bartucca says Frobes was tasked with submitting payroll, handling records, mail, and some communications. While in that role, she is accused of siphoning off more than $58,000 from the company over a five year period.

Bartucca said he was too trusting. “I guess I treat everybody the way I want to be treated,” he told the Times of Wayne County. It was a long, grueling process for him, though, to get to a point where Forbes would be charged.

This month, she was charged with grand larceny, a felony. Forbes was released and will answer the charge at a later date.
