NY death certificates for overdoses must note type of opioid

The state of New York now requires all death certificates for people who have died of an opioid overdose to specify which opioid was involved, if possible.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed the new legislation on Tuesday, Nov 5.

The Democratic governor says the law will allow public health officials to better address opioid addiction by having “the most accurate information.”

Under existing law, there is no requirement that death certificates include the specific opioid involved.

The new measure takes effect immediately.
