The Landmark Society of Western New York announced its 2019 Five to Revive – a list that identifies opportunities for targeted, strategic revitalization. The announcement was made at The Historic Parsells Church in Rochester.
Two local churches were named on the list.
The full-list of sites selected includes:
- Highland Reservoir and Cobbs Hill Reservoir in Rochester
- 6 Madison Street in the Susan B Anthony Neighborhood in Rochester
- King’s Daughters and Sons Building, Dansville
- Hamlet of Childs, Orleans County
- Adaptive Reuse of historic houses of worship – a thematic listing to shed light on people trying to adapt old churches to new uses. Four buildings were selected to represent theme. They are:
- The Historic Parsells Church, 345 Parsells Ave, Rochester
- Trinity Episcopal Church, 520 S Main St, Geneva
- Logan Community Center, Town of Hector, Schuyler County (intersection of County Route 4 and County Route 2).
- Former Wesleyan Church, 140 Fall St, Seneca Falls.
This is the seventh year that The Landmark Society of Western New York is announcing the Five to Revive list to draw attention to key priorities for revitalization in western New York. “Each year, these become priority projects for Landmark Society staff and programs as we work collaboratively with owners, municipal officials, and developers to facilitate investment and foster rehabilitation,” said Wayne Goodman, Executive Director.
On Wednesday, Real Estate Developer Mark McGroarty was in-studio as part of an upcoming episode of Inside the FLX, which will be released in-full on Saturday, October 19th.
He broke the news that the Trinity Episcopal Church site in Geneva was on the final list of ‘Five to Revive’. “We’re extremely fortunate to have gained the support of the Landmark Society in this effort,” he said. Despite some local opposition to repurposing the historic church – both McGroarty and supporters agree that developing the church into an events space with food and other amenities will prove beneficial to Geneva overall.
“The Five to Revive initiative is proving to be very successful and continues to demonstrate that preservation and adaptive reuse are key strategies for revitalization in western New York,” said Tom Castelein, chair of The Landmark Society Five to Revive committee. “The ultimate goal is to return these important historic resources to places of prominence in their respective communities, as economic and social assets that spark even more investment and revitalization.”
