Several dollar store chains have been hit with fines totaling $1.2 million for selling expired over-the-counter drugs, failing to comply state law and selling obsolete products, New York’s attorney general announced Monday.
The fines follow a months-long undercover investigation by the attorney general’s office that found Dollar General, Dollar Tree and Family Dollar were selling over-the-counter drugs months past their expiration dates.
State law prohibits the sale of such drugs past their labeled dates.
“New York consumers have a right to expect that products on store shelves are safe, fresh and suitable for their advertised use,” Attorney General Letitia James said in a statement.
