Onondaga deputy fired after pistol permit forgery

A newly hired Onondaga County sheriff’s deputy has been fired and charged after allegedly forging signatures on his own pistol permit application, according to CNY Central. Deputy Jamell Darden, 22, of Liverpool, is facing felony counts of forgery and falsifying business records.

Darden had only been with the department since January. Investigators say he submitted a permit application containing three fake reference signatures, which were uncovered during routine verification calls.

Sheriff Toby Shelley emphasized that no one is above the law and that the office will prosecute integrity breaches, especially from within its own ranks.
