Drivers can again travel the section of State Route 21 between Griesa Hill Road and Route 64 in South Bristol, ending a construction closure that lasted more than six months.
The town announced that work was complete and the detour was no longer necessary, according to RochesterFirst.com.
The road closed April 27 for a culvert replacement project. In its original construction advisory, the state Department of Transportation said it expected the road to reopen by the end of June. Traffic was directed onto County Road 12.
Instead, the closure continued through the summer and into fall. Town officials said the completed work includes infrastructure improvements designed to protect the area’s steep slopes, WROC reported.
The extended detour also affected travel during one of the area’s busiest weekends. As FingerLakes1 reported in September, the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office and town of Naples warned that the closure would push additional traffic onto County Road 12 during the Naples Grape Festival.
The reopening restores the direct route through the construction area in southern Ontario County.
