No. 14 Cornell’s women’s hockey team surrendered three second-period goals and lost 4-0 at No. 7 Quinnipiac on Friday in Hamden, Connecticut, despite 40 saves from Annelies Bergmann.
The Big Red were shut out for the second time this season as Quinnipiac goaltender Natalia Dilbone stopped all 24 shots, according to Cornell Athletics’ game recap. Cornell fell to 4-3-0 overall and 1-2-0 in ECAC Hockey, while the Bobcats improved to 9-2-1 and 4-1-0.
Quinnipiac takes control in the second period
Bergmann kept the opening period scoreless even as Quinnipiac outshot Cornell 11-4. The Big Red also killed a penalty to Delaney Fleming before the first intermission.
The Bobcats broke through at 5:27 of the second period, when Avery Bairos scored on the power play just 11 seconds after Carly Dann was penalized for interference. Makayla Watson and Rosalie Breton assisted on what proved to be the winning goal.
Alex Law doubled the lead at 17:24. Kahlen Lamarche then scored another power-play goal at 19:34, following a holding penalty to Lindzi Avar, to send Quinnipiac into the second intermission ahead 3-0.
Cornell matched the Bobcats with 14 shots in the second period, but Dilbone turned aside every attempt. Renee Bishop accounted for four of those shots, all of her attempts for the game.
Big Red unable to solve Dilbone
Quinnipiac held a 19-6 shot advantage in the third period and finished with a 44-24 edge overall. Cornell pulled Bergmann three times during the final eight minutes in an effort to cut into the deficit.
Law sealed the result with an empty-net goal at 16:42 of the third, her second goal of the game and eighth of the season. Law, Bairos and Dilbone were named the game’s three stars.
Rose Dwyer and Fleming led Cornell with five shots apiece, while Bairos led all skaters with eight. Beatrice Perron-Roy won 11 of 17 faceoffs, helping the Big Red finish with a 32-30 advantage at the dots.
Cornell went 0-for-3 on the power play and killed three of Quinnipiac’s five opportunities. The Big Red were assessed five penalties for 10 minutes; the Bobcats had three penalties for six minutes.
