New York voters brace for federal election interference

New York voters brace for federal election interference

New York voters are bracing for potential election interference.

More than 1 million New Yorkers voted early this year, an 80% increase from the 2022 midterms, as the Justice Department plans to send 1,000 election monitors to polling places in all states, and President Donald Trump is offering $1 million for voter fraud tips leading to convictions.

DaMareo Cooper, co-executive director of the advocacy group the Center for Popular Democracy, said it is part of a new brand of politics.

“If you’re offering a million dollars to some regular citizen to help you cheat and steal an election, that says more about how confident you are in the policies and the decisions you’ve made over the last two years, which have been hurting American people,” Cooper contended.

State officials like Attorney General Letitia James are reminding people federal law enforcement cannot monitor polling places and some people are still uncertain about whether mail-in ballots will be certified, though the U.S. Supreme Court ruled against federal efforts to limit mail-in voting.

Cooper argued state election officials must maintain the rule of law and voters should know how to identify voter intimidation when confronted with it. New court filings show the U.S. attorney general’s office sent letters to election officials nationwide reminding them to keep voting records for 22 months, with specific emphasis on the legal penalties for not doing so.

With election challenges almost certain, Cooper pointed out the federal government has tried demolishing pillars of democracy like birthright citizenship to repress voting rights.

“That is a foundational, core belief of this country but that’s really about how do you decrease the electorate; how do you make less people eligible to participate in this democracy that all of our ancestors really have fought for?” Cooper underscored.

A federal judge is ordering the Trump administration to name every state it demanded to remove specific voters and set aside or refuse to issue ballots since July 1. It is part of a lawsuit from Democratic groups alleging Trump violated the Voting Rights Act by pressuring states to remove voters from the rolls and threatening election officials with criminal prosecution.
