A 68-year-old woman died after firefighters found her unconscious inside a burning home on Cayuga Street in Union Springs on Wednesday night, according to New York State Police.
Troopers and the Springport Fire District responded to the fire around 8:33 p.m. Oct. 28. Investigators determined that two people were inside the home when the fire broke out, which was first reported by the Cayuga-Seneca Fire Wire.
One occupant escaped and alerted firefighters that another person remained inside. Firefighters entered the house and located the woman, who was transported by Auburn City Ambulance to Auburn Community Hospital. She was later pronounced dead.
State Police did not release her name.
Updates posted by Cayuga/Seneca Fire Wire described active fire on the second floor. Crews entered the home to fight the flames and search for occupants, but deteriorating conditions later prompted an update that all firefighters were out of the building.
Firefighters from Union Springs, Cayuga, Fleming, Montezuma, Aurora, Scipio and Owasco assisted during the response, according to Fire Wire. Crews also worked to pull down ceiling material and extinguish hot spots.
The State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation, Forensic Identification Unit and Cayuga County fire investigators responded to the scene.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
