Former Rochester-area trooper challenges firing over cannabis use

A former Rochester-area state trooper is seeking reinstatement after being fired following positive THC tests, according to the Times Union.

Alexsandr DelCorvo, an Air Force veteran who served nearly 12 years with State Police, says he used cannabis gummies off duty to manage pain and sleep problems following a work-related back injury.

A disciplinary panel recommended a 90-day unpaid suspension and a year of probation, but Superintendent Steven James rejected its recommendation and ordered his termination.

DelCorvo’s petition challenges the firing and the loss of his police certification, arguing there was no finding that he used cannabis on duty or worked while impaired.

The New York State Troopers Police Benevolent Association is supporting the case and argues that the punishment violates state protections for lawful cannabis use outside work.
