New York opens 0 million downtown funding round with January 8 deadline

New York communities can apply for a new $200 million round of downtown revitalization funding, with applications due January 8, 2027, at 4 p.m. Municipalities must meet the state's Pro-Housing Community requirements to qualify.

The money supports the 10th round of the Downtown Revitalization Initiative and the fifth round of NY Forward, according to the governor's announcement. Applications are available through the state's Consolidated Funding Application portal.

An informational webinar is planned for November 5. Registration is available through the DRI and NY Forward program websites, which will also carry a recording. New York City communities have an earlier deadline of December 30, 2026, to submit applications to their borough president's office.

The two programs have awarded a combined $1.34 billion to 178 communities. DRI has provided $1 billion to 101 communities over nine rounds, while NY Forward has awarded $340 million to 77 communities over four rounds.

DRI, launched in 2016, combines local planning with implementation support for downtown and neighborhood projects. The Department of State leads the program with assistance from Homes and Community Renewal, Empire State Development and the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority.

NY Forward focuses on smaller and rural communities, including hamlets and villages. It pairs communities with consultants for individual assistance in developing applications and implementing selected projects.

The new round offers two $4.5 million NY Forward awards per region, with different arrangements for New York City and Long Island. New York City's NY Forward and DRI funding is combined into one $20 million DRI award. Long Island's allocation will support two DRI awards totaling $20 million.

More than 460 municipalities have received Pro-Housing Community certification, the state said. That designation became a condition for access to DRI, NY Forward and certain other discretionary programs under the fiscal 2025 budget.

Gov. Kathy Hochul said the latest funding will help communities turn local plans into stronger business districts, housing opportunities and public spaces.
