Volunteer attorneys who provide free civil legal help will be honored Tuesday at the Legal Aid Society of Mid-New York's second annual Taste for Justice fundraiser.
The Legal Aid Society will hold the event Oct. 27 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at New Leaf Cider Co., 800 Nowlan Road in Port Crane. General admission is $50, and sponsorships start at $500.
The nonprofit law firm provides free civil legal assistance to low-income people and families across 13 counties in Central New York and the Southern Tier. The gathering brings together legal professionals, community leaders and supporters of that work.
Volunteer service and auctions
The event falls during the American Bar Association's National Celebration of Pro Bono, Oct. 25-31. The Legal Aid Society said this year's theme is āServing Justice. Strengthening Democracy.ā
āStrengthening democracy begins with ensuring that justice is accessible to everyone, regardless of income,ā said Michaela Rossettie Azemi, the organization's managing attorney of pro bono services. āIn our rural Upstate New York communities, free civil legal services and the dedication of volunteer attorneys help turn that promise into reality.ā
Food, drinks and entertainment are planned, including live music, cider, cocktails and appetizers. A live auction with an auctioneer and bidding paddles is new this year, alongside a silent auction featuring experiences and donated packages.
Local firms support the event
Coughlin & Gerhart is the overall event sponsor. Law firm cosponsors include Levene Gouldin & Thompson; Hinman, Howard & Kattell; Buckland Law Offices; Pelella Law; and Orville & MacDonald Law Offices.
Other supporters include Stewart's Shops, Protection Auto Detailing, Red Barn Technology Group, Just Tech, Delta, Real Estate Advisors Corp. and Construction Advisors Corp. The organization also recognized contributions from board members Matthew Skinner and Mary Fangio.
