Ten forest rangers carried a 77-year-old hiker with a possible broken leg off Big Slide Mountain in a rescue that continued overnight and into the next morning.
Ray Brook Dispatch received the call at 10:40 p.m. Oct. 12 in Keene, Essex County, according to the Department of Environmental Conservation’s report, released Thursday.
The rangers approached through Johns Brook Lodge. By 7 a.m., they had treated the hiker and reached a point within 1.5 miles of the lodge.
Crews cleared fallen trees and branches from the trail as they continued carrying the hiker through rough terrain and heavy rain.
They reached the trailhead at 11:40 a.m. The hiker said they would seek additional medical care on their own.
