More than 700 luminarias will light downtown Seneca Falls on Dec. 10 as a community celebration opens this year's It's a Wonderful Life Festival, marking the movie's 80th anniversary.
A Wonderful Night in Seneca Falls will run from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, presented by It's a Wonderful Life Seneca Falls Inc. in partnership with the National Women's Hall of Fame, according to a news release.
A lighted route through downtown
The luminarias will line walkways linking the Sackett District and the National Women's Hall of Fame with Fall Street's shops. Visitors can follow the route along Water Street and across the Bridge Street bridge, known as the “George Bailey” bridge.
For the annual festival, Seneca Falls takes on the identity of Bedford Falls, the movie's fictional town.
Organizers also will sell additional luminarias in advance. Buyers can honor someone with a luminaria placed along the sidewalks or purchase them for their own homes and private walkways.
Ice sculpture, music and local activities
A commemorative ice sculpture celebrating the film's 80th anniversary will be unveiled during the evening. Local musicians will lead holiday caroling, and visitors will receive complimentary cookies, hot chocolate and other treats.
Many downtown stores and restaurants plan special discounts, sales and giveaways. State Street festivities will take place in an area closed to vehicle traffic and include booths representing local organizations, games, entertainment and activities for all ages.
