Niles protection-order violation leads to contempt charge

A Syracuse woman was charged with second-degree criminal contempt after Cayuga County sheriff's deputies said she returned to a Niles residence despite a stay-away order issued in a domestic case.

The Sheriff's Office identified the woman as Emily MacNaughton, 37, and said deputies arrested her Friday, Oct. 16, on the misdemeanor charge.

MacNaughton had been arrested after a Sept. 29 domestic incident at the residence and was arraigned that day in centralized arraignment court, according to an Oct. 20 news release.

The court issued a full stay-away order protecting the other person and released MacNaughton with a later court appearance scheduled, the office said.

Deputies said MacNaughton went back to the residence after her release, violating the order.

She appeared in centralized arraignment court Oct. 16, when bail was set at $10,000 cash or $20,000 bond, according to the release.

MacNaughton posted bail Oct. 17 and was released.
