Niles man accused of repeatedly violating protection order

A Niles man faces two felony contempt charges after Cayuga County sheriff's deputies said he repeatedly contacted and followed a woman protected by a stay-away order.

Deputies arrested Jon S. Tanner, 66, at about 3 p.m. Aug. 21 and charged him with two counts of first-degree criminal contempt, according to Sheriff Brian Schenck.

The Sheriff's Office said deputies began investigating after receiving a complaint at about 8:33 a.m. that day about a possible order-of-protection violation in the towns of Niles and Owasco.

Investigators said Tanner had contacted the protected woman as many as 77 times in recent months and followed her vehicle through multiple towns. The stay-away order followed a previous domestic incident in which Tanner was arrested, according to the release.

Tanner was taken into custody, processed at the Public Safety Building and arraigned through Cayuga County's centralized arraignment process. He was remanded to the Cayuga County Jail without bail and was scheduled to appear in Owasco Town Court at 5 p.m. Aug. 25.
