Driver charged with DWI after crashing into guardrail in Aurelius

A driver was charged with driving while intoxicated after his vehicle struck a guardrail in Aurelius, the Cayuga County Sheriff's Office said.

Garrett Cochrane, 23, of Throop was arrested Oct. 2 after deputies responded around 10:20 p.m. to a one-car crash near Basswood Road and Clark Street Road, according to Sheriff Brian Schenck.

Deputies said Cochrane lost control while turning at a high speed, and the vehicle became embedded in the guardrail. After field sobriety tests, a breath sample registered a blood alcohol content of 0.16%, the sheriff's office said.

Cochrane was charged with driving while intoxicated, operating a vehicle with a blood alcohol content of at least 0.08% and moving from a lane unsafely.

He was issued appearance tickets and is due in Aurelius Town Court on Oct. 28 at 7 p.m.
