Dawn Upshaw to perform with Cornell students in Ithaca Oct. 22

Soprano Dawn Upshaw will perform with Cornell University students in a free public concert Oct. 22 at Barnes Hall in Ithaca. The 7:30 p.m. program is part of her visit to campus as an A.D. White Professor-at-Large.

The concert, “Salon Solèy: Inhabiting Text & Music in Contemporary American Art Song,” will bring student singers and pianists together with Upshaw, according to a Cornell Chronicle announcement. Admission is free, but advance tickets are required through Cornell's ticket office.

The program will explore how text, music, imagination and performance work together in contemporary American art song. Cornell said it will include compositions by Margaret Bonds, George Crumb, Caroline Shaw and others.

Upshaw has won five Grammy Awards and is a MacArthur Foundation fellow. She will also meet with students and faculty during the campus visit, Cornell said.

Jean Bernard Cerin, an assistant professor of music at Cornell, said Upshaw's work in opera, art song and new music has influenced generations of performers and audiences. He pointed to her recordings of Samuel Barber's “Knoxville: Summer of 1915” and her performance as Ann Trulove in Igor Stravinsky's “The Rake's Progress.”

The concert is open to the public at Barnes Hall on Cornell's Ithaca campus. Tickets must be obtained in advance at cornelltickets.com.
