Letchworth plans multiyear poison ivy control around Highbanks campsites

Poison ivy around campsites at Letchworth State Park's Highbanks Campground would be treated over four or more years under a state parks proposal.

The Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation found that the work would not have a significant adverse environmental impact, according to an Oct. 7 environmental notice.

The plan calls for treating poison ivy within 10 feet of each campsite to keep it from spreading into heavily used areas. The campground is in the Livingston County town of Leicester.

Crews would use chemical and mechanical methods. The notice identifies foliar applications of a triclopyr-based herbicide or another approved herbicide, along with other approved treatment methods.

Hand tools could be used to cut larger stems. After treatment, some areas could be replanted with native species.

The campground could be treated again each year as needed. The notice does not provide a start date, application schedule or campground closure announcement.

The state parks agency served as lead agency for the review. Its contact is Doug Kelly at 1 Letchworth State Park, Castile, NY 14427, or 585-493-3605.
