Garrett Bass-Sulpizio’s career-high four touchdowns leads Cornell to win Over Georgetown

Garrett Bass-Sulpizio accounted for a career-high four touchdowns Saturday, leading Cornell football to its second consecutive victory with a 35-14 win over Georgetown in Washington, D.C.

Cornell improved to 2-1 by scoring on its first two possessions of both halves before adding another touchdown on its opening drive of the fourth quarter.

The Big Red opened the scoring with a creative passing play. Bass-Sulpizio connected with Brendan Lee on a screen, and Lee then threw downfield to Ty Doughty for a 33-yard touchdown. Cornell followed with an 80-yard scoring drive, capped by Bass-Sulpizio’s one-yard touchdown run with 1:31 remaining in the first quarter.

Georgetown answered in the second quarter when Jack Johnson threw a 40-yard touchdown pass to Jonathan Alexander, cutting Cornell’s advantage to 14-7 at halftime.

Bass-Sulpizio and the Big Red offense quickly regained control after halftime. He threw touchdown passes of nine and 30 yards to Samuel Musungu on consecutive third-quarter scoring drives before adding another rushing touchdown from four yards out early in the fourth quarter.

Georgetown added a late touchdown, but Cornell’s defense closed out the victory.

Bass-Sulpizio completed 20 of 27 passes for 279 yards and two touchdowns while rushing for 35 yards and two scores. Musungu caught six passes for 91 yards and two touchdowns, while Lee finished with five receptions for 86 yards in addition to his touchdown pass.

Cornell’s defense recorded five sacks, its highest total in 13 games, and twice stopped Georgetown on downs inside the red zone. Braylon James added an interception, while Ian Wall and Johnny Williamson each recorded seven tackles.

Georgetown managed 252 passing yards but totaled just 90 rushing yards on 37 attempts and scored on only one of three red-zone trips.
