Pedro Gulli came off the bench and scored in the 78th minute Friday night, helping Syracuse men’s soccer rally for a 1-1 draw against No. 10 Pittsburgh at SU Soccer Stadium.
The Orange moved to 7-3-1 overall and 1-2-1 in Atlantic Coast Conference play, while Pittsburgh is now 6-2-2 overall and 2-1-1 in conference action.
Pittsburgh opened the scoring in the 13th minute, but Syracuse gained control of the match late in the first half after Panthers defender Logan Oliver received his second yellow card in the 41st minute and was sent off.
Playing with a numerical advantage, Syracuse consistently pressured Pittsburgh after halftime. The Orange finished with a 21-8 advantage in shots and earned all six of their corner kicks after the break.
Gulli entered the match in the 71st minute and made an immediate impact. Seven minutes later, he finished a combination play involving Chimere Omeze and Sachiel Ming to pull Syracuse level. The goal was Gulli’s fourth of the season.
The Orange continued to push for a winning goal, but Pittsburgh’s defense held firm to preserve the draw.
Syracuse goalkeeper Juan Martinez-Bastidas played all 90 minutes and made four saves. Three of those stops came during the final 10 minutes, when Pittsburgh continued to create chances despite playing a man down.
Syracuse will return to the road Tuesday, October 6, for a matchup against No. 18 Akron. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
