Syracuse survives blown 20-point lead with overtime win over UConn as Amari Odom accounts for six touchdowns in debut (full coverage)

The Syracuse Orange blew a 20-point lead Saturday afternoon, then needed a late touchdown and a two-point conversion in overtime to escape with a 42-41 win over Connecticut at Rentschler Field.

Syracuse improved to 2-2 overall, snapping its losing streak against FBS opponents while avoiding what would have been another damaging loss.

Amari Odom provided the spark Syracuse desperately needed in his first start at quarterback. Replacing Steve Angeli, Odom completed 27-of-37 passes for 335 yards and five touchdowns while adding another touchdown on the ground. He also threw two interceptions and was sacked twice.

Odom’s six total touchdowns tied for the second-most in a single game in Syracuse history. Umari Hatcher was his top target, catching 12 passes for 152 yards and three touchdowns.

Syracuse built a 34-14 advantage in the third quarter before Connecticut mounted a furious comeback. Kalieb Osborne threw for 314 yards and three touchdowns, while Cyncir Bowers rushed for 163 yards and two touchdowns, including a 71-yard touchdown run that tied the game at 34-34.

Shay Barker missed a field goal as time expired in regulation, sending the game to overtime.

Connecticut scored first in overtime on a 25-yard touchdown pass from Osborne to Justin Cornist. Syracuse answered when Odom scrambled outside the pocket before finding Hatcher for a 17-yard touchdown on fourth-and-goal.

After a Connecticut penalty, Odom took the ball himself and powered across the goal line on the two-point attempt from inside the 2-yard line to complete the comeback.

Tylik Hill added 140 rushing yards on 28 carries for Syracuse, which now turns its attention to Virginia next Saturday.
