Bath man convicted of assaulting police officer

A Steuben County jury has convicted a Bath man of felony assault after a confrontation with village police left an officer injured.

Fredrick C. Valkenburgh, 40, was found guilty Oct. 1 of second-degree assault, second-degree obstructing governmental administration, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct, according to the Steuben County District Attorney’s Office. The jury deliberated for just over two hours.

Prosecutors said the case stemmed from a Sept. 5, 2025, incident on East Morris Street in Bath. Valkenburgh was walking in the roadway and stopping traffic when Police Chief Donald Lewis and Officer Taylor Waite responded, the district attorney’s office said.

After officers repeatedly asked Valkenburgh to leave the road, they attempted to arrest him. Prosecutors said he resisted and caused significant physical injury to Waite.

Supreme Court Justice Thomas Moran remanded Valkenburgh to the Steuben County Jail without bail after the verdict. He faces up to seven years in prison when he is sentenced Nov. 24.
