A Cayuga County jury has convicted a former Auburn Correctional Facility inmate of four counts of second-degree assault for attacking two correction officers in the prison hospital.
Nashane Peterkin was found guilty Oct. 1 in Cayuga County Court, according to the district attorney’s office. The charges arose from a July 9, 2023, incident while Peterkin was incarcerated at the facility.
Prosecutors said Peterkin bit a correction sergeant’s right thumb and elbowed another officer in the right eye. Both were treated at a hospital. The sergeant needed several stitches, while the other officer suffered an injury to the surface of the eye and a fracture around the eye socket, according to the district attorney’s office.
Peterkin is already serving a 20-year sentence imposed in Nassau County in 2014 for convictions that included first-degree rape and first-degree criminal sexual act. The district attorney’s office said any sentence in the Cayuga County case must be served consecutively to that term.
He faces up to 14 years in prison, five years of post-release supervision and a $5,000 fine. Sentencing is scheduled for Jan. 15, 2027.
