Former Auburn inmate convicted of assaulting two correction officers

A Cayuga County jury convicted a former Auburn Correctional Facility inmate Thursday of four counts of second-degree assault for injuring two correction officers in the prison hospital.

Nashane Peterkin bit a correction sergeant on the right thumb and elbowed another officer in the right eye during the July 9, 2023, incident, according to an Oct. 1 release from District Attorney Brittany Grome Antonacci's office. A jury of seven men and five women returned its verdict at about 3 p.m. Thursday.

Both officers were treated at a hospital. The sergeant needed several stitches to his thumb, while the other officer suffered a corneal abrasion and an orbital blowout, the district attorney's office said.

Peterkin is serving a separate 20-year sentence imposed in Nassau County in 2014 after convictions for first-degree rape, first-degree criminal sexual act and other felonies involving assaults on two women, the release said.

He faces a maximum of 14 years in prison for the Cayuga County convictions, followed by five years of post-release supervision and a $5,000 fine. State law requires any prison term in this case to run consecutively to his existing sentence, according to the district attorney's office.

Peterkin is scheduled to be sentenced Jan. 15, 2027. Chief Assistant District Attorney Christopher Valdina prosecuted the case.
