National Grid's proposed gas-rate freeze for nearly 2 million New York City and Long Island customers could leave them paying more later, according to New York Focus.
The company wants to keep delivery rates steady until spring 2028 without a traditional rate case before state regulators.
Consumer advocates say the plan would extend an existing bill premium and allow future charges tied to more than $1.7 billion in proposed gas infrastructure spending.
National Grid says the proposal balances affordability with infrastructure needs, while the Department of Public Service says regulators will review it rigorously.
The Public Service Commission has no deadline to act and could approve, reject or modify the plan or move it into a full rate case.
