Planned semiconductor plants, data centers and new energy projects are increasing pressure to expand upstate New York’s high-voltage electric grid, according to the Times Union.
Independent power developers want the state Public Service Commission to approve more transmission projects through competitions open to companies beyond existing utilities.
They argue competition could speed construction and lower costs, while National Grid says development should balance utility expertise with opportunities for outside bidders.
New York’s transmission network grew by a little more than 1% over the past decade, according to data from the state’s grid operator cited in the report.
The commission says it is identifying investments to meet rising demand and support clean-energy projects as utilities plan more than $4 billion in system improvements.
