A boil water notice has been issued for portions of the village of Waterloo after a water main break caused the system to lose pressure early Thursday morning.
The advisory applies to properties at 4-56 West Elizabeth St. and 17-38 Center St., according to the Seneca County Health Department.
Officials said the water system lost pressure at about 5:30 a.m. Sept. 24 because of the break. Loss of pressure increases the possibility that untreated water and potentially harmful microbes could enter the water system.
Residents in the affected area should bring tap water to a rolling boil, boil it for one minute and allow it to cool before using it. Bottled water certified for sale by the New York State Department of Health can also be used.
Boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, making ice, washing dishes, brushing teeth and preparing food until the advisory is lifted.
The waterline was being repaired Thursday, but officials said residents will likely need to continue boiling water for at least three days while the problem is resolved and testing is completed.
The village will notify residents when boiling water is no longer necessary.
