New York State Police are asking for the public’s help locating a man accused of breaking into a Lyons home and repeatedly striking a person with a hammer.
Matthew T. Butchino, 40, is wanted on an arrest warrant stemming from a Sept. 6 burglary and assault on Canal Street, according to State Police.
Troopers responded to the residence for a reported burglary in progress. Investigators said Butchino allegedly entered the home unlawfully and assaulted the victim, including striking the person multiple times with a hammer.
Butchino fled before troopers arrived, police said.
The victim was later treated at Geneva General Hospital for multiple lacerations and a facial fracture.
Butchino is wanted on two counts of first-degree burglary, second-degree assault and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon. The burglary charges are felonies.
State Police said Butchino’s whereabouts remain unknown and troopers are actively searching for him.
Anyone with information about his location is asked to call State Police at 585-398-4100 or email crimetip@troopers.ny.gov.
Police warned members of the public not to approach or attempt to apprehend Butchino and instead contact law enforcement.
The investigation remains ongoing.
