A major reconstruction of North Road in the Town of Canandaigua has been completed, adding new sidewalks, rebuilding the roadway and upgrading drainage infrastructure along a corridor used by nearly 4,700 vehicles a day.
The project extended from County Road 28 to East Street and included eight-foot-wide sidewalks, reconstructed pavement, realigned travel lanes, new curbing and stormwater improvements. The work was designed to improve pedestrian access along a stretch that previously lacked sidewalks, including for people traveling to Canandaigua Academy and nearby businesses.
MRB Group, which provided engineering design, construction management and construction observation services for the town, said the project was completed in 2026.
The improvements were also intended to support the town’s longer-term plans for the Uptown Canandaigua area, where officials have envisioned additional mixed-use development and a more walkable transportation network.
Sidewalks added along previously car-focused corridor
Before the reconstruction, North Road did not have sidewalks along the project corridor, according to MRB Group.
The completed project added eight-foot-wide sidewalks intended to create a safer pedestrian connection along the road while improving access between residential areas, the high school and nearby commercial properties.
In addition to the pedestrian improvements, the roadway itself was reconstructed and travel lanes were realigned.
Photos of the finished project show newly paved travel lanes, curbing and sidewalks installed along portions of the corridor, along with reconstructed intersections and drainage structures.
Stormwater work targets drainage and water quality
A significant portion of the project also focused on stormwater infrastructure.
The work included installation of a new underdrain and storm sewer system, along with replacement of a major culvert near Cayuga Road.
MRB Group said those improvements were designed to improve drainage while helping protect water quality within the Canandaigua Lake watershed.
The project combined those underground improvements with the roadway reconstruction rather than treating drainage, pedestrian access and pavement conditions as separate projects.
MRB Group said it worked with the town and the project contractor during construction to limit disruptions to residents, businesses and school traffic. The company said the project was delivered within budget, though the project summary did not specify the total cost.
Greg Hotaling, P.E., and Dave Herman were listed as the project’s team lead and client manager.
The completed corridor is intended to provide a more direct pedestrian connection while supporting future development and transportation options in the northern part of the town.
