A Dundee man who was already jailed in connection with a series of Wayne County home invasions has now been indicted on a murder charge in the July killing of a 77-year-old Rochester man.
Jonathan Shearin, 34, was indicted on one count of second-degree murder in the death of Marc Stekloff, according to Rochester police. The indictment was unsealed Monday in Monroe County Court, where Shearin was remanded to the Monroe County Jail.
Shearin had been arrested July 2 in Wayne County in connection with three separate home invasions in which six elderly victims were assaulted. Rochester investigators later developed him as a suspect in Stekloff’s death.
Police said Stekloff was found dead July 3 inside his apartment at 149 N. Union St. after a friend went to check on him because he had not been answering his phone.
The Monroe County Medical Examiner’s Office determined Stekloff had been stabbed more than three dozen times.
Investigators believe the killing happened before Shearin went to Wayne County.
Police said Stekloff was last seen alive on the morning of July 1 while bringing garbage cans in from the curb. He was seen having what appeared to be a brief, friendly interaction with a man walking nearby.
Detectives allege that man later entered Stekloff’s home, assaulted and stabbed him, took his car keys and fled in Stekloff’s vehicle.
The car was found July 4 in a parking lot in the 1100 block of Hudson Avenue.
Rochester police said investigators used private surveillance footage and city camera systems to help identify Shearin as a suspect.
Because Shearin was already being held in Wayne County, Rochester homicide detectives worked with prosecutors and law enforcement agencies in both Monroe and Wayne counties as the homicide case moved toward a grand jury presentation.
Police said Shearin is a predicate felon and was on parole for previous burglary convictions at the time of the July incidents.
The second-degree murder charge remains pending in Monroe County Court.
