A 34-year-old Corning man was arrested after State Police said a bicyclist was struck from behind by a vehicle that left the scene on East Corning Road.
Casimiro R. Johnson was charged with second-degree assault, a Class D felony; leaving the scene of an accident resulting in serious physical injury, a Class E felony; and tampering with physical evidence, a Class E felony.
According to State Police at Painted Post, troopers were called around 9:55 p.m. June 29 for a reported hit-and-run crash involving a cyclist.
Investigators said a woman was riding east on East Corning Road when she was struck from behind by a vehicle that continued from the scene without stopping.
The woman was taken to Robert Packer Hospital in Pennsylvania for treatment and was later released.
At the crash scene, troopers recovered a maroon passenger-side mirror and a fog light assembly cover that investigators believed could be matched to the vehicle involved.
During the investigation, State Police said they received information about a maroon vehicle with front-end damage and a missing passenger-side mirror. The driver of that vehicle had approached a nearby residence seeking help changing a tire and told residents the damage had been caused by hitting a deer, according to the release.
Troopers identified Johnson as a suspect through that report and later located his residence, where they found a damaged maroon vehicle with a spare tire installed.
Johnson was processed at State Police Painted Post and transported to the Steuben County Jail.
