A Corning man already jailed on charges tied to the alleged rape of a 90-year-old woman is facing another felony after authorities said he assaulted a fellow inmate at the Steuben County Jail.
Jonathan A. Rivaldo was arrested Tuesday, Sept. 1, by Steuben County sheriff’s deputies and charged with second-degree assault, a Class D felony, according to the sheriff’s office. Investigators said Rivaldo assaulted another inmate, causing injuries that required treatment by jail medical staff.
Rivaldo remains incarcerated in connection with the Corning case involving the alleged rape of a 90-year-old woman. The woman later died, according to Corning police.
The latest charge is not the first Rivaldo has picked up while being held at the Steuben County Jail.
In early August, sheriff’s deputies charged him with possessing a weapon inside the jail. Less than two weeks later, authorities said he assaulted another inmate and caused injuries in a separate incident.
According to prior reports, the newest assault charge brings Rivaldo’s felony total across incidents dating to July 14 to 20.
Following Tuesday’s arrest, Rivaldo was taken to Centralized Arraignment Court and then returned to the Steuben County Jail without bail, according to the sheriff’s office.
The new charge remains an allegation and is separate from the criminal proceedings stemming from the Corning case.
