The New York Yankees made two additions to their roster Tuesday, activating third baseman Ryan McMahon from the injured list and adding right-handed reliever John Schreiber as Major League Baseball rosters expanded to 28 players.

The 31-year-old completed a brief rehab assignment with the Somerset Patriots on Saturday, going hitless in three at-bats while striking out twice.
Although McMahon has struggled offensively overall this season, his production has improved considerably over the past three months. He enters his return batting .216 with a .282 on-base percentage and a .367 slugging percentage, along with 10 home runs. Over his last three months of action, however, he has hit .240 with a .301 on-base percentage and a .430 slugging percentage.
His return will also provide a significant boost defensively. The Yankees have dealt with inconsistencies on the left side of the infield since McMahon went down.
New York also added Schreiber to the active roster after claiming him off waivers from the Kansas City Royals on Monday. The 32-year-old posted a 3.65 earned-run average in 55 appearances for Kansas City, though his underlying numbers were less encouraging. He recorded an 18 percent strikeout rate and an 11 percent walk rate.
