A Rochester-area family has created a fund to support home-care workers and patients after local realtor Gar Lowenguth received months of care at home during the final stage of his life.
Lowenguth and his wife, Cindy, were together for 40 years and married for 38. He spent 11 years as a teacher before moving into real estate, where he worked for more than two decades with Lowenguth Realty and later more than 20 years with RE/MAX.
The couple were also involved in historic preservation. Gar Lowenguth served with the Landmark Society and on a city board, reflecting a longstanding interest in Rochester's neighborhoods and history.
Care after a hospital stay
Lowenguth was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2008 and Parkinson's disease in 2018, according to Rochester Regional Health. After pneumonia led to an eight-day hospital stay in November 2025, he returned home.
Rochester Regional home-care workers assisted the family for about 18 weeks. Cindy Lowenguth said nurses and other staff helped manage medical needs while allowing her husband to remain in familiar surroundings.
He transitioned to hospice care March 9 and died the following day. The family thanked caregivers Robert, Kelly, Tara, Max and Tiffany for their work during his illness.
Fund will support workers and patients
Cindy Lowenguth established a fund through the Rochester Regional Health Foundation. The fund is intended to help home-care employees with professional needs and provide emergency assistance for patients.
The health system said home-based care can include nursing, therapy, medication support and help coordinating services after hospitalization.
The family said the fund is meant to continue Lowenguth's commitment to the community while recognizing workers who help patients stay at home.
