A Hobart and William Smith Colleges professor has edited a new edition of a guide to writing about film, television and digital media, expanding the book to cover artificial intelligence, immersive formats and online fandoms.
Associate Professor Lisa Patti edited the second edition of “Writing About Screen Media,” published by Routledge in August. The collection includes work from more than 40 scholars.
The book examines film, television, advertising, social media, video games and mobile media. New chapters address rapidly changing forms of production and criticism, including AI-assisted media and immersive experiences.
Writing beyond the traditional essay
Contributors also explore formats such as video essays, podcasts and ArcGIS StoryMaps. Patti said those forms can help students analyze how screen media work while also producing media of their own.
HWS colleague Leah Shafer contributed a chapter titled “The Sharp, Short, Sweet Art of Blurb Writing.” Nick Ruth created the cover print for the volume.
Patti's scholarship focuses on film, language and global media. She is also working on a second edition of “Film Studies,” expected in 2027.
Teaching and scholarship
Patti joined the HWS faculty in 2011 and teaches courses involving film history, theory and criticism. She earned graduate degrees from Cornell University.
The new edition is intended for students and instructors who need methods for researching, interpreting and presenting arguments about screen media.
